Nigeria’s Solar Manufacturing Race Gains Momentum as Local Players Target a Growing Energy Market

Nigeria’s solar industry is moving beyond equipment imports as local manufacturers and government-backed initiatives expand domestic panel production. Companies including Auxano Solar, Salpha Energy and Oando Clean Energy are investing in manufacturing capacity, while large-scale projects could reshape Nigeria’s renewable-energy supply chain. The emerging solar manufacturing industry presents new opportunities—and significant execution challenges—for investors.

Nigeria’s renewable-energy market is entering a new phase as local companies and government-backed initiatives move beyond solar installation and distribution into domestic panel manufacturing and assembly.

The shift could have important implications for Nigeria’s energy transition, industrial development and the investment outlook for companies positioned across the renewable-energy value chain.

For years, Nigeria’s rapidly expanding solar market has depended heavily on imported equipment, particularly panels and related components manufactured in Asia. Rising demand for alternative power, however, is creating an incentive to develop local production capacity and capture a larger share of the value generated by the country’s energy transition.

Several Nigerian companies are now positioning themselves to benefit from that opportunity.

Auxano Solar leads Nigeria’s local manufacturing drive

Auxano Solar Nigeria Limited remains one of the most established names in Nigeria’s solar manufacturing space.

Founded in 2014, the Lagos-based company became Nigeria’s first private solar-panel assembler. Its manufacturing capacity has since expanded significantly following the commissioning of an automated production facility in Ibeju-Lekki in 2023.

The plant increased the company’s stated production capacity from 10MW to about 110MW, giving Auxano a substantially larger platform from which to serve Nigeria’s growing solar market.

The company has received more than $2 million in cumulative funding from All On, the Shell-backed impact investor, supporting the development and expansion of its manufacturing operations.

Auxano supplies solar developers as well as distributors and resellers serving the fast-growing off-grid and distributed-energy market.

Its expansion illustrates a broader trend: solar manufacturing in Nigeria is increasingly being viewed not simply as an energy project, but as an industrial opportunity linked to the country's persistent electricity supply gap.

Salpha Energy expands beyond solar panels

Salpha Energy is taking a somewhat broader approach to the opportunity.

The Calabar-based renewable-energy company operates a manufacturing facility producing solar-related systems and other energy products, including battery-powered fans.

The strategy reflects an important feature of Nigeria's renewable-energy market: demand is not limited to solar panels.

Households, small businesses and informal enterprises increasingly require affordable alternatives to grid electricity and petrol or diesel generators. Products combining solar generation, battery storage and efficient appliances therefore have potential applications across a much wider consumer market.

For manufacturers, this creates an opportunity to develop locally relevant products rather than compete solely in the commodity panel market.

Oando Clean Energy targets gigawatt-scale production

A potentially more significant development is emerging from Oando through its renewable-energy subsidiary, Oando Clean Energy.

The company signed an agreement with the Rural Electrification Agency in March for the development of a 1.2GW solar-panel assembly plant.

If executed as planned, the project would represent a major increase in Nigeria’s domestic solar manufacturing capacity and could place Oando among the country's most significant players in the emerging solar manufacturing ecosystem.

The scale of the proposed facility is particularly notable because it signals growing interest from established energy companies in moving into renewable-energy manufacturing.

For investors, this could be an indication that Nigeria's energy transition is gradually broadening beyond power generation and project development into equipment manufacturing and supply-chain infrastructure.

Government-backed projects raise the stakes

The private sector is not alone in pursuing large-scale domestic solar manufacturing.

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has also established a special-purpose vehicle involving the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria and Dutch solar manufacturer Solarge to develop a 1GW solar-panel factory.

The proposed project represents a different model from conventional private-sector manufacturing, combining government-linked capital and institutional support with international manufacturing expertise.

The involvement of the REA is significant because the agency sits at the centre of several programmes designed to expand electricity access and accelerate Nigeria's transition toward distributed and renewable energy.

A domestic manufacturing base could potentially support these programmes while reducing the country's dependence on imported solar equipment.

Why local solar manufacturing matters to investors

Nigeria's solar opportunity is fundamentally linked to its electricity deficit.

Millions of households and businesses remain dependent on self-generation or distributed power solutions, creating a large addressable market for solar systems, batteries, inverters and related equipment.

But the investment opportunity extends beyond companies selling finished solar systems.

A more developed domestic industry could create opportunities across several segments:

  • Solar-panel manufacturing and assembly

  • Battery and energy-storage systems

  • Inverters and power electronics

  • Solar system installation and maintenance

  • Distribution and retail

  • Financing of distributed-energy projects

  • Industrial components and ancillary equipment

  • Commercial and residential solar-as-a-service models

The emergence of large manufacturing projects could therefore stimulate a wider ecosystem rather than simply increase the number of locally assembled panels.

The China factor remains important

Nigeria's ambition to localise solar manufacturing will, however, face a formidable competitive challenge.

China dominates global solar manufacturing, benefiting from enormous production capacity, established supply chains, technological expertise and economies of scale.

Nigerian manufacturers may therefore struggle to compete with imported panels purely on price, particularly where imported products benefit from lower production costs and mature supply chains.

The more sustainable strategy may be to combine local manufacturing with other advantages, including shorter supply chains, local after-sales support, customisation, government procurement, local-content policies and access to domestic renewable-energy projects.

For Nigerian manufacturers, achieving sufficient scale will also be critical.

Manufacturing capacity is not the same as market competitiveness

The rapid announcement of gigawatt-scale projects should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that Nigeria has already established a competitive solar manufacturing industry.

The key question for investors will be whether announced capacity translates into commercial production, competitive pricing and sustained utilisation.

Capital requirements, access to foreign exchange for imported components, electricity and logistics costs, technology transfer, financing conditions and demand certainty will all influence the economics of domestic production.

There is also the question of whether local manufacturers can develop enough downstream demand to keep large plants operating efficiently.

This makes partnerships with government programmes, solar developers, distributors and large commercial energy users particularly important.

A potential new investment theme

Nigeria's solar manufacturing push could eventually become an important industrial and investment theme within the country's broader energy transition.

The first phase of Nigeria's solar market was largely about importing equipment and deploying it. The next phase could increasingly involve manufacturing, assembling, financing and servicing those systems locally.

Companies such as Auxano Solar and Salpha Energy are already building manufacturing capabilities, while Oando Clean Energy and government-backed initiatives are pursuing projects at substantially larger scales.

The outcome will depend on execution.

For investors, the companies worth watching may not necessarily be those with the largest announced capacity, but those capable of converting manufacturing investments into competitive products, strong utilisation rates, recurring revenues and sustainable margins.

If that happens, Nigeria's solar boom could evolve from an import-driven market into a more integrated domestic renewable-energy industry—creating opportunities not only for manufacturers, but also for investors across the wider clean-energy value chain.
